Analysis
Themes
Nineteen themes, each a transparent list of terms. A message mentions a theme when it uses at least one of the theme's terms and two of its words in all, or one term in its title. Common words (in grey) count only beside a term; set phrases (struck through) contain a theme word but mean something else and are ignored.
Many messages only touch on a theme: a digest with one item on Aceh, a speech that names the economy in passing. So a model reads how the theme's words fall in each message (how many, how early, how concentrated, in how many paragraphs) and judges whether the message is about the theme. It is a logistic regression fitted on 914 messages read by hand, and each theme's threshold was set so that nine in ten of the messages above it are about the theme. The lines show the share of each month's messages that are about the theme, from October 1990 to February 2002.
Precision is measured on fifty messages drawn at random from those the model places in each theme. Because each theme has its own threshold, compare a theme across time rather than the sizes of different themes.
